Pets protect children from stress
According to the study, pet can protect your child from anxiety and worry. A child who has a dog that is physically active, body mass index (BMI) in the norm, as with the pet he always have to go for walks and play. But how Pets can help mental health?
Pets encourage communication that eliminates social anxiety. Dogs also affect communication signals of a person that can help in emotional development. Communication with dogs reduces anxiety and arousal, reduce anxiety, thus improving mental health and reducing abnormalities. The domestic dog can prevent potential problems in adolescence. Children’s behavioral and emotional competence, prevent mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders in adulthood.
However, there is little evidence about the benefits of pet dogs for young children. Scientists from the Medical center Bassett in new York explored the hypothesis that communication with dogs is linked to healthy weight and mental health of children.
The researchers observed 643 children aged 4−10 years during the 18-month period. Of these, 45% were girls and 58% had pet dogs in the house.
Scientists have not found any difference regarding BMI in children with and without dogs. But among children who had dogs, 12% had tested positive for anxiety, compared with 21% of children who had no dogs.
The researchers suggest: “the companionship of a dog lowers the level of cortisol, which decreases physiological responses to stress. These hormonal effects affect emotional and behavioral conditions in children”.
